The Briefest of Scenes

I was in a Sherlock Holmes story - complete with Robert Downey Jr.
(which I guess makes this a Sherlock Holmes movie)

"What do you make of this?" He asked me, handing me a pair of old fashioned saddle shoes. I looked at them. On the side of one of them was carved an intricate mathematical problem. There was a big formula inside a square roots symbol. I tried to decipher it.

"But that's...that's impossible," I said, because according to my calculations, the answer to the math problem was the solution to the square root of negative one.

"Precisely," he responded.
